Common Frog | Photos and Info

The common frog has a rather robust body with shortish-hind limbs and webbed fet. As is normal for frogs, the male frog tends to be smaller than the female, and has bluish-black nuptial pads on their first fingers. The nuptial pads become more noticeable during mating season, when they tend to swell a little more than usual. This helps the male frog hold the female frog.

The common frog has smooth skin that can vary in colour from grey, olive green, yellow, and brown. It is covered with blotchy darker patches. They have dark 'masks' covering their eyes and eardrums and often have barred markings on their limbs and flanks.

The common frog lives mainly on land during the breeding season, and can be found in meadows, gardens and woodland. They breed in ponds, even puddles, lakes and canals. They prefer areas of shallow water.
The common frog tends to be more active at night, though it is also around during the day. They are sexually mature at around 3 years old. During February and March they emerge from hibernation and make the journey to the chosen breeding ground. They have been known to return to the same breeding ground year after year.

Edible Frog | Photos and Info

The Edible Frog (Pelophylax kl. esculentus) is a name for a common European frog, also known as the common water frog or green frog (however, this latter term is also used for the North American species Lithobates clamitans). It is used for food, particularly in France for the delicacy frog legs. Females are between 5 to 9 cm long, males between 6 to 11 cm.

Edible frogs remain very still when they are guarding the muddy banks, and this along with their camouflage, makes them very difficult for predators to spot. Their eyes are positioned near the top of their heads meaning they can also see danger coming whilst their body is mainly hidden. Snakes, owls and water-dwelling birds are the main predators of the edible frog, along with humans who commonly eat them. Edible frogs will jump into the water and hide if they sense approaching danger, and will make a loud screeching sound if caught. Edible frog populations are also under threat from habitat destruction mainly caused by deforestation and water pollution.

Frog | Wildlife

Frogs start out as tadpoles, and slowly mature into adults. Most frogs are semi-aquatic in nature. The specific characteristics of frogs vary greatly, from poison levels to natural colouration. Frogs (and toads) are part of the Amphibia class, sharing it with Salamanders and Caecilians. A frog is a fresh-water amphibian of the family Ranidae, in the Order Anura. They are closely related to toads. The Ranidae are sometimes called the "true frogs" since a few members of other families also have common names including the word "frog.".

Frogs are a diverse group with some 4800 species. Most spend their lives in or near a source of water (water frogs), although tree frogs live in moist environments that are not actually aquatic. The requirement for water becomes most acute for egg and tadpole stages of the frog, yet here again some species are able to utilize temporary pools and water collected in the axils of plants.

Frogs range in size from less than 50mm to 300mm in Conraua goliath, which is the largest known frog. All frogs have horizontal pupils, smooth skin and long legs with webbing between their toes. This family has a bicornuated tongue that is attached in front: They also have a tympanum on each side of their head, which is involved in sound production. Most frogs have deep, booming calls, or croaks, with some being onomatopoeically represented by the word "ribbet" or "ribbit."
