Giant Anteater might be five to seven feet lengthy, from nose to tail, and weigh 40 to 100 pounds. It has a small head, very long nose, little eyes, and around ears. Its rough hair may be gray or brown, with a white-banded black stripe going along the body to mid-torso, and a long, hairy tail, which could be two to three feet long. Its front feet have big nails, which are curled beneath when it walks. It has weak perspective but an eager sense of smell.
Giant Anteater finds pest piles and anthills with its keen sense of smell and holds them open with its powerful claws. What we call up an anteater's nose is in fact a pointed jaw bone with a small, black, wet nose, similar to a dog's nose. Giant anteaters have a two-foot-long tongue and big salivary glands that create massive volumes of sticky spit when they feed. Termites, ants, and their eggs keep to the tongue as it is pictured in and out and the bugs are crawling off by the bending of the lower mouth and ingested. Anteaters have a very muscular stomach that crushes up the insects and strong intestinal fruit juices to digest their feed. They may eat as many as 30,000 ants in a day. They will also eat perfect fruit if they find it on the ground.
