The Wildlife | Giraffe | The Giraffe is the tallest mammal on earth. Giraffes are also among the few mammals that can't swim. Their natural habitat is i the African Savanna, a relatively open, grassy plain with few trees and shrubs. Giraffes, like many animals, are threatened not only by their natural predators, but by the loss of their precious habitat and by the carelessness of humans.
Males stand up to 18 feet tall and weigh up to 4,200 pounds; females grow to 16 feet tall and weigh up to 2,500 pounds. Giraffes live up to 25 years in the wild and often longer at zoos. Giraffes eat the leaves of a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs. Acacia species are among their favorites. An adult giraffe may consume up to 140 pounds.
The Giraffe has spots covering its entire body which is believed to help the giraffe camouflage itself slightly in the African wilderness. Giraffes however, do not have spots on the underside of their tummies and each giraffe has spots that are truly unique to the giraffe as an individual.
